Higher Vocational School of Visual Communication Scholastika

Vyšší odborná škola vizuální komunikace Scholastika

Scholastika is a private educational platform and higher vocational school in the field of design, fine and applied arts.

Scholastika School was founded in 2012 as a private educational project by visual artists, students from the most prestigious creative universities in the Czech Republic AVU and UMPRUM by Ondřej Brody and Evzen Šimera. Since that time, Scholastika School has received a professional recognition and some awards (for example, the Main Award for Schools at DesignBlok).

  • Studies are carried out in 3 specialties: “Product design”, “Graphic design” and “Motion design”.
  • The program is designed for 3 years, upon completion of studies, graduates receive a degree of a certified specialist (DiS.).
  • Scholastika Higher School is characterized by new practical approaches to learning, high-quality equipment for classrooms and workshops, teachers from among the best modern designers, artists, and art theorists.
  • Among the teachers are the internationally recognized designer Jan Čapek, graphic artist and one of the founders of the Botas 66 brand Jan Kloss, curator and design theorist Adam Stech, photographer Ginek Alt, illustrator Vladimir Streychek, art theorist Theresia Nekvindova, communication and marketing specialist Dominik Grodek.
  • The number of students on the course does not exceed 25 people.
  • Design teaching is based on the experience of the contemporary Czech and foreign design scene and attempt to comprehend the contemporary history of design.

  • During teaching, the emphasis is on developing students’ self-dependence and giving them the freedom to choose a specialization. Great importance is also attached to the ability to fit into the Czech and European field of applied art.
  • The school collaborates with design studios and self-employed designers who accept students for practice.
  • Studies are in the form of atelier. At the end of the semester, students exhibit their works in an open public exhibition. The term papers of students are evaluated by a commission consisting of teachers and invited designers.
  • Students also have the opportunity to receive advice from young European designers who are invited by the Scholastika platform to presentations and lectures to the public.
  • Scholastika supports students in exhibition activities and organizes student exhibitions in Czech galleries several times a year.

Product design

The direction of product design is developing and makes new demands on young designers. Scholastika Higher School students of Product Design specialty study product and manufacturing in terms of technology, production, and material constraints, understanding product functions, and marketing strategies.

Graduates can present their projects, know the basics of technologies of work with various materials (metal, wood, glass, ceramics, plastic), can work with the most modern technologies (3D scanner, Rapid Prototyping), know modern design discourse, and design history, know the characteristics world design centers.

Graphic design

The aim of studies in the specialty “Graphic Design” is to prepare students for the practice of a graphic designer in all possible roles – creating a corporate identity, posters, packaging concepts, preparing publications. Students gain practical knowledge in the context of studying the history of visual art, typography, design. Great importance is attached to the development of argumentation skills – students learn to defend their design decisions.

Students work in graphic programs Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator. Workshops and lectures on various topics in the field of graphic design complement the studies in atelier and seminars.

Motion design

Motion design is a dynamic way of visual communication. The direction uses animation, graphic design, visual effects, new technologies, video, and interactive media. This is a new specialty for the higher school Scholastika. The main characteristic of the direction is inconsistency and changes in time. Students learn to design and create models and implementations in the field of moving images for media, movies, advertisement, as well as free art.

Graduates can work in TV industry, motion graphics, internet video, and mobile applications.

Costs

The tuition costs are 38,000 CZK. Scholastika Higher School offers scholarships and discounts to talented senior students.

Entrance exam

The entrance exam is held in the middle of June.

All teachers of the school are present at the exam. The exam is held in the form of an interview. You need to bring your works (at least 10), comment on them in front of the commission, and tell about your motivation to be engaged in design.

Preparation for admission to the most prestigious creative universities in the Czech Republic 

If you wanted to enroll in UMPRUM or AVU but did not pass the competition, you can enter the Scholastika Higher School and in a year try to enter the most prestigious creative universities.

Last year, 16 Scholastika students entered AVU, UMPRUM, FaVu, FAMU, UJEP, and FUD.
