Brno University of Technology (BUT)

If you want to study modern technologies, engineering, science or art in the second largest city in Czech Republic, Brno University of Technology (BUT, or VUT in Czech) just may be your perfect place. 

Brno University of Technology is the largest technical university in Czech Republic. Also the oldest – the first technical college in Brno was founded in 1849, and in 1899 it was established as Imperial Czech Technical University of Franz Joseph in Brno.

Back there, the university offered just a single course of civil engineering. Today BUT has eight faculties and two specialized institutes, focusing not only on teaching, but on research as well. Here, you can choose among more than a hundred Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral programs in the field of technology, natural sciences, economy or art.  The university has many connections with different innovation centres all over Europe, and it is the place where lots of Czech startups come from.

Study in Czech or English

If you decide to study in Czech language in Technological University of Brno, you are required to provide a Certificate of proficiency in the Czech at B2 level along with the application. 

Tuition fees for English-taught programs

Czech language programs are free of charge regardless of your nationality, meanwhile all English-taught programs are paid. However, even English-programs with tuition fees in BUT are affordable, compared to universities in western Europe. 

At the moment there are two English-taught programs available in BUT, both are Master‘s. The first one is Architecture and Urbanism (Faculty of Architecture). In the academic year 2021-2022 tuition fee for this program was set for 3 500 euros per year. Another one is Environmental Sciences and Engineering (Chemistry Faculty), with a fee of 150 euros per semester.

According to Studyportals, Brno University of Technology is ranked 701 in QS World University Rankings by TopUniversities. It also has an overall score of 4.5 stars, according to student reviews.

Applications submissions deadlines 

Most faculties in Technical University of Brno have an application deadline by 31st March. However, some programs have several stages of exams: for example, they demand an applicant’s portfolio and creative exams, and such programs have earlier deadlines. For example, the Fine Arts Faculty has Bachelor’s applications deadline by November 30. Also Bachelor‘s programs of the Faculty of Architecture have an application deadline on January 7th.

Programs and admission exams

Each faculty in Brno University of Technologies has its own admission exams. Most of programs‘s requirements include a written test in chosen subjects, sometimes an interview with chosen applicants.

Faculty of Architecture (FA)

Bachelor‘s and Master‘s program: 

  • Architecture and Urbanism (different branches)

Bachelor‘s degree admission exams have three stages: 

  1. creative presentation exam, which consists of two assignments: pencil drawing and assignment in architecture.
  2. learning potential test (OSP exam by Scio), which could be done on the website
  3. interview with chosen applicants.

Master’s degree admission exam consist of an assessment of a portfolio with applicant‘s creative work and an interview.

Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication (FEKT)

Bachelor’s degree programs:

  • English in Electrical Engineering and Informatics
  • Audio Engineering
  • Biomedical Technology and Bioinformatics
  • Electronics and Communication Technologies

Admission exam consists of two tests: in mathematics and a seconda subject (physics, IT or biology).

Master’s degree programs

Different programs in the field of electroengineering, bioengineering and audio engineering. Check on the faculty‘s website: www.feec.vutbr.cz.

Admission exam consists of a written test with 10 tasks on 5 topics according to the corresponding Bachelor’s program.

Faculty of Chemistry (FCH)

Bachelor’s degree programs: 

  • Applied Analytic, Environmental and Forensic Chemistry
  • Chemistry and Chemical Technologies
  • Chemistry and Materials‘ Technologies
  • Environmental Chemistry, Safety and Management
  • Chemistry for Medical Application 
  • Chemistry and Food Technologies (different branches)

In the academic year 2022/2023 there are no admission exams for Bachelor‘s programs.

Master‘s degree programs: 

  • Environmental Chemistry and Technologies
  • Chemistry for Medical Application
  • Chemistry and Technology of Materials 
  • Chemistry of Natural Materials
  • Chemistry and Chemical Technologies 
  • Environmental Science and Engineering

As for Master‘s programs, there is an admission exam of a written test in chemistry.

Faculty of Information Technology (FIT)

Bachelor’s degree program:

  • Information Technology

Admission is based on the result of the national exam in mathematics (MAT SCIO) or learning potential test (OSP by SCIO).

There are 17 Master’s degree programs in IT field, such as: 

  • Bioinformatics and Biocomputing
  • Information Technology Security
  • Intelligent Devices

  • Supercomputing
  • Software Verification and Testing

Admission exam consists of a written test in information technology and an interview.

Faculty of Business and Management (FP)

Bachelor’s degree programs:

  • Economics in Business 
  • Accountancy and Taxes

  • Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development

Admission exam consists of a learning potential test.

Master’s degree programs

  • Strategic Business Development
  • International Economics and Business
  • Information Technologies‘ Management
  • Accountancy and Financial Management 

Admission exam consists of a learning potential test.

Faculty of Civil Engineering (FAST)

There are 43 Bachelor’s degree programs in the field of architecture and civil engineering, such as: 

  • Geodesy and Cartography
  • Municipal Engineering
  • Civil Engineering (in English or Czech)
  • Environmentally Developed Buildings
  •  and many others

Admission exams for all programs except Architecture of Building Structures program consist of a written test in mathematics (10 tasks) and physics (10 tasks).

For the Architecture of Building Structures program there is a creative presentation exam, which consists of two parts: geometric shapes drawing from a model and interior sketch on a given topic or subject.

There are 12 Master’s degree programs in the field of civil engineering and architecture. The admission exam consists of a test in the main disciplines of the corresponding Bachelor’s program. The exam topics are posted on the faculty website.

Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (FSI)

Admission exam consists of: 1) assessment of portfolio 2) creative presentation exam with a written test in culture. 

Master’s degree programs are the same as Bachelor‘s, but also include a branch of Multimedia in Games.

Admission exams consist of a creative presentation exam with assessment of portfolio and an interview.
